Old Bro was born from a skateboard ramp that was built in 2005 by a group of skaters. They needed a place to skate, so they pooled their money and resources and built a ramp and named it the Old Bro.
Many people from all over Southern California and eventually the world came to skate the Old Bro.
Skate sessions on the ramp were known as Old Bro sessions and when a group of guys who frequented the ramp would skate somewhere else, those also became known as Old Bro sessions. It didn’t matter what city, state or even country these happened in, they were Old Bro sessions.
Another thing that happened in 2005, was that my family and I went to Egypt to volunteer at a kid’s sports camp in the desert outside of Cairo. I naturally brought some skateboards and that was the start of a kids skateboard program in Egypt. The Old Bros started donating their skate gear, time and money. In 2011 we built Egypt’s first concrete skate park. Eight years and fifteen trips later, the skate program in Egypt is going strong and hundreds of kids have learned to skateboard at the camp, thanks to the Old Bros.
Eventually we came to realize that it didn’t matter if someone was a skateboarder to be considered an Old Bro.
Being an Old Bro has nothing to do with age. A 12-year-old kid could be an Old Bro to his friend that he’s known for years or his uncle could be his Old Bro. A person can consider someone they have only known a short time, yet they have an immediate connection with, an Old Bro.
It also didn’t have to do with gender. Women establish close relationships with other women or men that can be an Old Bro.
Whether a person Skateboards, surfs, rides motorcycles, builds hot rods, races boats, is an artist, a fisherman, a pilot, a clothing designer, an architect, a mom or dad raising their children or does anything they are passionate about and have friends or family that are passionate about their interests or support them in what they believe in, those people are each other’s Old Bro.
